We’ve been quietly admiring Holly Ann Friesen’s work for quite some time, so we’re thrilled to finally welcome her as our newest addition to the Canvas roster.
Our first selection of her work has just arrived: four gorgeous sun-lit forest landscapes. Please enjoy, we think they're pretty special.
What grabbed us first was the way Holly paints the Canadian landscape without ever feeling tied to a specific place. These paintings sit somewhere between memory and observation—those fleeting moments of light through trees, reflections on water, and the feeling of being deep in the woods when everything goes quiet.
Holly’s background in plant science and landscape studies gives her a unique connection to the natural world, but what I love most is that she leaves room for the viewer. These aren’t paintings that tell you exactly what you’re looking at. They invite you to bring your own memories, favourite trails, cottages, lakes, and forests into the experience.
The brushwork is loose, confident, and beautifully layered. Up close they’re wonderfully abstract; from across the room the landscape slowly reveals itself. We’re excited to share these first pieces with you.
