"Nursery rhymes as oracles are easily passed down through the ages .
The sing-song rhythm makes them stick in our memory even if we don't give much thought to their words.
This particular rhyme associates the number of birds in a sighting with a message for the person who sees and counts them. It has several different variations, but this is my favourite and I can fully imagine the stories that thrive in the news that these "birds" bring." - Beverley Hawksley
