1. Identify the space that you want to fill. Art should be more or less in scale with the space it hangs in, which means you'll want large pieces for large spaces (over the mantle if you have one, or over the sofa) and smaller pieces for smaller spaces. Medium sized pieces can also be combined in diptychs and triptychs to fill a large area, plus it will give you some flexibility with the spacing.
2. Go with your gut rather than trying to match your decor. If the focus is on what you think would work rather than what you love, most likely you will end up unhappy with your choice down the road. As well, don't be afraid to try out different pieces & styles before making a commitment. Your space/lighting will showcase artwork differently than the gallery it's displayed in, so it's always good to try before you buy.
3. Think of the art as the focal point of your room. If you're furnishing a new home or office, you can choose colours and textures from your artwork when looking for furniture and fabrics to decorate the rest of your space. It's always easier to begin with the art rather than trying to find artwork to match your decor.
4. Learn how to care for the artwork. Ask the seller or dealer when you buy the artwork; should you wipe with a damp cloth, or just dust? How much sunlight will cause fading? And so on. Regular care will ensure that the artwork continues to give you pleasure for years to come.
