It's with great sadness that Megan and I have learned that a long time member and friend of Canvas has passed away unexpectedly. George Pavlasek, a photographer with a beautiful eye for both urban and pastoral landscapes has left us all too soon. We always loved to see George walk into the gallery (almost always unannounced ) with some photographs that always left us wanting to travel more and live the moments he captured on film.
George worked in film and television for many years as a props master as I did, and Megan worked with George on commercials years ago. We loved talking with George about the business and the absurd things we had to do to get the right product shot for the toothpaste, the beer or the kids cereal. That may have paid the bills, but his real love was capturing his vision on film.
George has left us all with wonderful memories and stunning photographs that will live on forever.
His artist statement may say it all:
Each moment, as it passes, is the meeting place of two eternities... There is a time to be born and time to die, there is also an interval between these two times of infinite importance and these are the moments and time in which is Toronto based photographer George Pavlasek interested. Since 1995 he has consistently questioned this evolution of time and challenged to capture it on film. His images not only reflect time, they also stimulate our senses, evoke old memories and atmospheres and nurture our dreams at the same time...... Traditional techniques of a straight and non manipulated photography are used to capture on Hasselblad camera.
