Susan's work has been exhibited at numerous galleries throughout Canada. She has had numerous private commissions, her work is internationally collected, and she was named 'The Artist to Collect' by Arabella Magazine in June 2011. Originally from Toronto, she now resides in Prince Edward County, Ontario where in addition to her encaustic work, she is exploring other artistic mediums such as photography, sculpture and print-making.

This artist uses his canvas as a place to create and to explore symbols drawn from his subconscious. The placement of a symbol within a square or rectangle on his canvas is synonymous to a graffiti tag on a rectangular newspaper box or an arrow on a one-way street sign.

Primarily self taught, Sheila has been a professional artist for over 15 years. Her interest lies in obscure areas of the environment as seen on the periphery of daily vision. Sheila works in oil, preferring large panels. Using dynamic brushstrokes and saturated colour, she captures the friction and play of texture and temperature where surface planes meet, challenging the eye to look deeper, to see beyond the obvious, to become aware of those areas of nature necessary to existence, to see beauty in the mundane.

Spectacular Skies: The Latest from Eric McCully

This just in; some gorgeous new landscapes from Eric McCully.

Inspired by the beauty of nature and familial love, Eric paints his world: children, the landscapes of his native home in Northern Ireland, and his new home in Canada. Born in 1960 to a working-class family in Belfast, Eric’s talent for painting was discovered at an early age. He soon developed a yearning to experience more of the world, and painted his way through over 35 countries in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, North and South America. Eric had four children with his first love, Gillian, who died of cancer in 2001. In 2004, he met and married a Canadian. He and Kelly now have five children and share a happy home in Ottawa, where he keeps his studio. Through the experiences of intense joy and sorrow afforded by his life, Eric has come to appreciate the true beauty that can be found in the simple things: a child dipping his feet in a lake for the first time, or the beauty of a sunset.

Dan went on to enter the Ontario College of Art and later received instruction in the art of illustration at Sheridan College. His training as an illustrator has given him a solid foundation for his art.

We love these two beautiful landscapes brought in this week by Toronto artist Ian Varney.

Ian completed his Advanced Diploma of Fine Art at LaTrobe Street College of Art and New Media in Melbourne Austaralia in 2004. Prior to this he was a Toronto based Family Physician for 23 years.

In his oil landscapes, with their obscured gridworks and patterns, Ian seeks to remind us of the silent geometry and molecular constancy that remains hidden from our eyes. In his Encaustic work, he reassembles different landscape images, and integrates unrelated images to create new places not found in reality.

We just received six gorgeous new oil landscapes from Irish-born artist Eric McCully.

Inspired by the beauty of nature, Eric paints his world: children, the landscapes of his native home in Ireland, and his new home in Canada. Born in 1969 to a working-class family in Belfast, Eric's talent for painting was discovered at an early age. He soon developed a yearning to experience more of the world. and painting his way through over 35 countries in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, North and South America.

Textural Tones from Karen Kawarsky

We love these new panels from Karen Kawarsky.

Karen’s work is influenced by a fresco technique, dating back to the middle ages, through her use of stain, oil and acrylics applied to wet and dried plaster on wood. Karen uses tools to create a roughened surface, and to enhance color and depth, she uses an a high gloss epoxy resin to finish each piece.

Sarah's work explores the concept of memory. She is interested in the deceptive nature of memory and the way photographs can act as trigger points for a viewer's memory. Through photography and painting she explores the way personal and collective memories can meld together and be manipulated.

Canvas Gallery Welcomes Artist Michael Black!

We're excited to welcome artist Michael Black on board at Canvas Gallery.

"Informed by a late Modern interpretation of abstraction, my current practice comprises three distinct directions - abstract interpretations of landscape,organic/biomorphic forms, and rather more meditative works using sand and mixed media. In each case, I have tried to balance the pre-planned with the immediacy of the painting process itself, so that the images created are able to utilize abstraction's ability to convey universal themes as well as variations in interpretation."

Michael graduated from the Ontario College of Art (now the Ontario College of Art and Design) in 1984, and holds a Doctorate in Education from the University of Toronto. Michael has shown his work in Toronto, Charlottetown, Creemore, Thornhill and Peterborough. His work is held in several private collections. Michael lives in Durham Region with his Wife and Son.
